1963 - 2023

60 years of Doctor Who

I was one of those lucky enough to have watched the first episode of Doctor Who in 1963, only to then being disappointed when it was repeated a week late due to the news of the assassination of President Kennedy in America, the day before . I was only young at the time and it must have been one of the first TV programs I watched.
Although I did follow the series over the years it was its re-launch in 2004 that got me properly interested.
With the 60th anniversary getting close, I decided to finish some modeling projects which had a Doctor Who link, and create some more which hopefully could be exhibited around the time of the anniversary.

Crooked House Pub

When the Crooked House pub burnt down and was then demolished I was saddened like so many people. I wondered if I could create a 3D printed model.

After seeing a couple of models produced I found enough information and photos to start. I soon realized it was not just an unusual shape to design, but that the brick bond was unusual, being a cross between English/Garden Wall bond and Flemish bond. It is 3 rows stretcher bond then one row Flemish.

There were several very clear photos of the front of the pub, so assuming standard brick size it was possible to map out the bricks.

I then wondered if this could be offered to the group hoping to get the pub rebuilt so designed the model for home printing. The main body is one section and the roof and supporting walls is a second.

STL Files

There is still a lot of misinformation and hype relating to 3d printing.

Here is a quick breakdown of how 3d print printing works.

Either
Select a suitable CAD application software.
Create and complete the design.
Save and export the design into 3D printing STL file format.
or
Download the design in stl format from internet
Pick a suitable slicer program.
Allow the slicer to convert the STL file into a printable G-code.

I found this online which might help

Slicing means converting the 3D model file into a machine language that can be recognized by the printer, and the printer can only print successfully after recognizing this machine language. This machine language is called the G-Code file.
Support structures are an integral part of the FDM 3D printing process. In short, they help 3D printers overcome certain design limitations, like geometries with steep angles and overhangs. Today, most slicer programs automatically generate supports, making it easy for makers to use them.

After 10 years being involved in designing models for 3D printing, using Shapeways to do the actual printing, I felt it was time to look at ways to offer the print files to modelers to print themselves. I have had lots of requests but have also heard or been told of problems, but now believe it is possible for modelers with their own printers to print many of my designs.
Initially I planned to sell collections of stl files, but now Shapeways have gone bankrupt I am looking to sell off my complete collection (over 11000 stl files) and original CAD files
