Like other countries France experimented with steam railmotors. Most were not very successful, and internal combustion railcars proved far more successful

CF d'Etat double deck steam railmotor

The French railways used a lot of double deck passenger coaches, often referred to as Bidels. The CF d'Etat experimented with a version with a steam loco fixed at front end and driven on one loco wheel. 2 examples were built, but only lasted 10 years and were not very popular due to excessive vibration caused by the steam engine. No photos exist, only some drawings from which a 3d printed design has been produced.
